Which Apple Watch Is Right for You? (All Models Compared)

Apple sells a trio of Apple Watch models. We break down the key differences between all three.

Apple now sells three different Apple Watch models: the Series 9, the Ultra 2 and the SE 2 (Gen 2). If you have an older Apple Watch and are curious whether you should upgrade, we're going to highlight the key differences between all the Apple Watch models that are still capable of running the latest watchOS — meaning all Apple Watches that are Series 4 or newer.

The truth is that every Apple Watch that has been released in the last four years has been generally similar — except for the super-rugged Ultra. They all run the same watchOS, look and work fairly similar and have the same 18-hour "all day" battery life. Choosing between the different models is ultimately going to come down to the newer design, an always-on display, some exclusive wellness features and how much you're willing to pay. (Apple does have some enticing deals on older refurbished models.)

What's Next for the Apple Watch?

Apple released the Series 9 and Ultra 2 in September 2023, so a new generation of watches isn't expected for at least a year. Given that 2023 was a year for small updates, 2024 could be a more notable year with new designs and materials in addition to new features; Apple is believed to be working on glucose monitoring via the Watch, so that could roll out with next year's model. An Apple Watch SE (Gen 3) is also possible for spring 2024.

Apple does not sell any of the follow Apple Watch models — from 2022's Series 8 to 2017's Series 3 — as they are dated. Apple does sell refurbished models of some of them and you can find others deeply discounted from third-party sellers like Amazon or Best Buy.

However, even though you can get a deal on an older Apple Watch, it's often not really worth it considering you're getting an older, slower and dated smartwatch. Plus, with the new SE, you can get a new-age Apple Watch for as low as $249.
