The best off-road camping trailers meet your camping requirements without compromising your off-roader. They're capable, durable and lightweight. Now, Utah-based camper company AntiShanty is seeking to build the ultimate affordable version of that idea with its new 4XD trailer.
Here's what you need to know about it.
The AntiShanty 4XD trailer is incredibly lightweight
The 4XD is made from riveted aluminum — great for keeping out the elements, or the odd bear. It weighs just 1,000–1,500 pounds, depending on the configuration. That's light enough to be towed by a base Jeep Wrangler, Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness or pretty much any other vehicle equipped with a tow bar. It comes with a hard-sided insulated rooftop dwelling that AntiShanty says can sleep two adults plus a child or a dog.
AntiShanty equips the 4XD model to follow your off-roader
The 4XD has a full range of motion, with a lock and roll articulated hitch and an independent suspension to help soften the ride. AntiShanty fits the 4XD with BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires in sizes ranging from 29–4o in.
The AntiShanty 4XD has all the storage
The 4XD trailer has a lockable truck bed compartment with a fold-up tonneau cover for easy access. It has kitchen boxes on either side, which can accommodate a kitchen/pantry setup or — if you're not using it for food storage — full-size skis and camping chairs. There's also a front compartment accessible through gullwing doors on either side.
And the 4XD Pro model brings serious amenities
AntiShanty's 4XD is not a fully-equipped off-the-grid luxury apartment. But the top-end XD Pro model offers several amenities, including a slide-out Dometic fridge, cargo lighting and a 180-degree awning. Owners can charge the high-capacity 200-Ah battery with shore power or a 100-watt solar panel affixed to the rooftop dwelling. There's also an auxiliary outlet to add further solar capacity.
How much does AntiShanty's 4XD off-road camping trailer cost?
The 4XD is relatively reasonable, at least by adventure vehicle standards. The Spartan 4XD Base starts at $21,900. The amenity-laden 4XD Pro begins at $27,900. You can also buy the base 4X trailer without the rooftop dwelling for $14,900.
